Shahdara Sharief (Rajouri), October 3
Speculations are still on as to who killed the militant in the Kalsian area of Upper Shahdara Sharief on September 27 evening. The recorded statement of Noor Ahmed, in whose house the militants had entered on September 27, a copy of which is available with The Tribune, says that Noor killed the militant. His daughter Rukhsana, who hogged the limelight and became the focus of the country, had claimed on every television channel and newspapers that she killed the militant.

According to Noor Ahmed, three unidentified gunmen entered his house around 9:30 pm on September 27 and started thrashing him with sticks. Noor, who is nursing his wounds in the District Hospital, had said they were inquiring about the case of rape by two locals with his daughter Rukhsana.

Noor had said when they started kicking him, his brother Wakalat Hussain and son Ajaz Ahmed intervened and they attacked a militant. They also struck another militant with the axe, killing him. He had said Rukhsana also picked up the other rifle and ran after the gunmen. “She also fired at the militants”.

Rukhsana, who hogged the limelight, had claimed on the news channels and the newspapers that she had killed the militant with an axe. Meanwhile, a copy of the FIR at Thanamandi police station assessed by The Tribune reads that both father and daughter killed the militant.

The Tribune on September 29 had quoted police sources saying in a rare act of bravery Rukhsana, 20, along with her younger brother Ajaz Ahmed (18) after seeing Noor Muhammad (father), Rasheeda Begum (mother) and uncle Walayat Hussain being beaten by a group of three militants, killed a militant with an axe and injured another in the same manner in the Kalsian area of the Upper Shahdara area of Thanamandi, near here. They added that the third militant fled.

“Rukhsana along with her brother Ajaz hit one of the militants in the head with an axe, who died on the spot, and injured the other militant. The third militant, who was unarmed, managed to take the other militant along and escape leaving the slain militant behind,” the sources said.

They said after the incident the family members of Noor Hussain went to Shahdara Sharief police post and narrated the incident to the police, besides handing over the militant’s weapon to the police. They added that the police recovered the body of the slain militant and deployed police personnel at Noor’s house.

The intercepts by the security forces of communication between the militants who escaped revealed that the slain militant was Osama, a commander of the LeT.

DIG, Rajouri-Poonch range, SD Singh Jamwal told The Tribune that “We are investigating the matter. If our investigation reports are in sync with what locals say, we will recommend a bravery award for the girl and her brother”.
